Rorisang Mogojwe, better known as a Yarona FM radio personality will launch her debut novel, a creative non-fiction offering, Naledi Confessions next week. Vibe caught up with her to find out more about her writing journey.

Vibe: When did you start writing?

RM: I have been writing for as long as I can remember. I was that school girl who got gold stars in compositions in primary and aced English literature in secondary school. I have always loved writing stories as a form of expression and therapy. I started writing professionally during my university days when I was freelancing for different publications.

Vibe: Tell us a bit about Naledi Confessions...

RM: It is a story chronicling the (mis) adventures of three best friends who lose themselves in the city while, ironically, trying to discover themselves and their life purpose. We see the story unfolding from Naledi’s point of view. The book highlights the different challenges that young women go through in their journey of self-discovery including depression, alcohol and drug abuse, the blesser life, gender based violence and others. The story is written in a comical manner to allow everyone to relate, and ultimately spark dialogue.

Vibe: How do you approach your writing – is it a way of healing, informing or entertaining your readers?

RM: A combination of all three. Healing because I personally went through some of the experiences Naledi and friends went through (i.e. depression) so penning the story was quite therapeutic. Informing because there are still certain issues our society shies away from openly discussing. And entertaining because a story like this can be read for leisure purposes, or edutainment, if you may. My general approach to writing is to evoke emotion and give the reader food for thought.

Vibe: What is the underlying message of Naledi Confessions?

RM: That life will always throws challenges your way but you can come out better and stronger. In other words, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Readers should expect lots of emotions and a general good read.
