The Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) will host over 300 players during a national chess championship in Gaborone this weekend. The tournament will be the first National Championship qualifiers sponsored by Metropolitan Botswana. “In the first qualifiers stage of the tournament we will have players in the open section battling it out for 23 slots at the second stage of the National Championship. In the ladies section they will be battling it out to fill 17 available slot at the second qualifiers stage,” a statement from the BCF reads.

The Metropolitan National Champions from last year (Defending Champions) are exempted from participating in the first qualifiers stage. The defending Champions are Candidate Master (CM) Barileng Gaealafshwe and Women International Master (WCM) Boikhutso Mudongo. The defending champions are expected to join the first qualifiers at the second qualifiers stage of the event. The players to look out for in the open section are CM Monnaatsheko Keletshabile, FM Thato Olebile and FM Phemelo Khetho. In the women’s section the player to look out for as a tough contender for the ladies section is WIM Onkemetse Francis.
