The recently introduced Mayor’s Cup is expected to fill the cracks left by the once popular Kabelano Charity Cup, the Health and Charity one-day tournament will kick off on July 22 and will pit four local teams against one another.

BTC premiership clubs Mochudi Center Chiefs, Extension Gunners and newly promoted sides TAFIC and Sharps Shooting Stars are expected to compete in the off-season encounter. According to Gaborone city mayor Kagiso Thutlwe the tournament will not be only used as a form of entertainment but it will be used to encourage people to test for HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases like tuberculosis, Cancer and obesity.

“We continue to do different activities, to influence men to test for HIV as they are mostly lagging behind when it comes to testing therefore we challenge them as football lovers to come forward and test for HIV/AIDS in particular,” he stressed.

Thutlwe explained that tickets would be given out on the day for people to attend the game and test. Moreover money raised through the tournament will be donated to charity as a way of improving lives through football. For his part, the Manager at National Aids Coordinating Agency Joseph Kefas applauded the Mayor for his driven desires to improve the healthy lives of Batswana.

“Sports comes in as leisure and business, it is a good initiative that the mayor is pushing for a healthy Botswana and trying so well to align with the World Health Organization.” However the tournament is aligned to another event being the Kasi to Kasi tournament designed to unearth raw talent across the length and breadth of Gaborone. The Kasi to Kasi Tournament will kick start this weekend with G-West Select Side playing Bontleng White City and Extension 27 clashing with Old Naledi, the return leg for the games will be on the 1st July and the winners will play the final at the National Stadium on July 22.
