Car spinning has become a big hit in Maun following an event that was held in the tourist town for the first time over the Easter holidays.  The organisers of the event, Emergency Assist motorsport club, said they will be going back to the northern town next year.

According to one of the organisers, Simon Modisaemang, the event attracted multitudes of motosport enthusiasts as some were clamouring to get inside the venue that was fully packed.

“People had to steal glimpses of the action from outside the venue as they could not get inside. We set out to find whether there was potential for the sport in the area,”

he said. Modisaemang said they would consult with stakeholders such as Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) and the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture to see if they could host the event annually in Maun and attract people from Namibia and South Africa.“Maun residents were happy that they got value for money during the event.

However, my club which was sponsoring the event had to pay a premium amount of up to P15 000 for the parking area near the stadium event although there were no ablution facilities and we had to barricade the venue.”

According to Modisaemang, local spinners managed to attract new fans to the extreme sport. “Our local spinners including King Joe, Magistrate and Sherrif have shown a lot of improvement”. Meanwhile, Modisaemang said they would be looking for partners in the Ngamiland area to develop a half a kilometre Go Karting facility in a bid to grow motorsport in Botswana.
