Ousted Deputy Mayor misses court appearance
Former Francistown Deputy Mayor and Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) councillor for Moselewapula ward, Lechedzani Mudenga has failed to appear before Francistown Magistrate on Monday due to ill-health.
Mudenga who was recently dethroned from his position as Deputy Mayor of Francistown is charged with a single count of obtaining by false pretence.
The state alleges that in April 2015 on an actual date unknown to the prosecution in Francistown, Mudenga unlawfully and intentionally took P45 000 from Karabo Nkwai by falsely claiming that he could facilitate her obtaining two plots through his position as Deputy Mayor.
When he failed to deliver his end of the bargain, Nkwai had no choice but to drag him to the police. The prosecuting officer, Mompoloki Gaboiphiwe told Francistown Chief Magistrate, Gaedupe Makgatho that Mudenga could not come to court due to ill-health. She pleaded with court that he be given time to recuperate.
Mudenga is not alien to controversy. He barely attended full council meetings when he was Deputy Mayor, which eventually led to his fall from grace. Mudenga is expected in court for arraignment on May 26 this year.
