Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) confirmed the official hand over of its Francistown West constituency to Botswana Peoples Party (BPP) over the weekend in a deal which will guarantee Botswana Congress Party (BCP) President Dumelang Saleshando a constituency in the coming general election.

Speaking to The Midweek Sun, BMD chairperson Nehemiah Modubule confirmed that the official letter handing over the constituency to Botswana People’s Party (BPP) is on its way to the party office expected to be received this week.

“As we speak, the letter is already on its way to BPP, but I am also sure that they haven’t received it. By the end of this week they will have received the letter to start the campaigns in earnest.” BCP had no choice but to accede to the constituency swap since they could not afford to enter the 2019 general election without their party president whose former constituency in Gaborone Central is a BMD no-go area following constituency allocations among member parties of the UDC.

Under what conditions the Francistown West is being handed over to BPP remains a dark secret since no one is prepared to shed light on the swap. BPP through its secretary general Venter Galetshabiwe claimed ignorance of the handover of the constituency. He revealed that the party has not been formally updated except to hear it from local news outlets. “As we speak, we have not even identified a candidate but can only do that once we receive an official notification on the issue of the constituency handover from BMD.

Currently the party cannot make any comments until such a time,” Galetshabiwe said. The swapping of these constituencies has not come without controversy especially in Francistown where some disgruntled BCP members feel they were undermined by their leadership in giving away the constituency when they had prepared well to win it for the UDC.

The BCP regional structures had hoped Vain Mamela would represent the umbrella party and some have even threatened to cross floors to display their displeasure. Former Francistown West MP Mamela was also reported to be so disgruntled that he was contemplating an exit from the BCP to stand as an independent candidate.

Observers however say he knows he can’t win as an independent candidate and that the best he could do is to hope the BPP in turn offers him to stand as the latter have yet to identify a candidate. Mamela has vehemently rubbished reports of his intended departure. Speaking to The Midweek Sun on the matter, Mamela said that whoever was spreading such rumours had malicious intents. “As we speak, I am at Moselewapula ward campaigning for the BCP in Francistown,” he said.
