Vice President of the Alliance for Progressives (AP), who also doubles as Francistown South Member of Parliament Wynter Mmolotsi has labelled President of Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) Sydney Pilane a snake amongst the opposition parties. He said Pilane’s aim is to cause instability and confusion ahead of the 2019 general election, something they had long warned their colleagues in opposition about. Speaking at a packed political rally to launch AP in the northern part of the country at Chedu Choga freedom square, Mmolotsi blasted Pilane saying “he is a snake amongst the opposition” from whom they have run away to form the Alliance for Progressives. He said that when they decided to bolt out of the BMD after their loud protestations against Pilane, they were dismissed as cry-babies and hungry for power, but warned UDC that Pilane was yet to reveal his real character.

AP Secretary General Pheyo Butale also lashed at Pilane calling him a “political sell-out not to be tolerated amongst the opposition parties,” who will eventually grab power from the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition which is allegedly deeply divided over the Pilane-led BMD. Mmolotsi informed the rally that AP is already an alliance on its own and invited all progressive people to join it to save Batswana from the scourge of unemployment. The MP invited churches and different organisations to come on board and join the new party, which he said stand for fundamental freedoms of speech and many other rights that the current regime does not uphold. AP Youth League President Jacob Kelebeng informed the rally that they have uncovered that the closure of BCL and Tati Nickel mines were done in bad faith by the government. However, he assured hundreds of youth who had attended the rally that when they take over power they will reopen the mines and employ youths.
