Former Botswana Movement for Democracy Youth League (BMDYL) President Phenyo Segokgo escaped losing his chairmanship for South East District Council (SEDC) by a whisker this week.

According to sources, Segokgo had the election for the council leadership moved forward from end of this month to Monday this week. After realising that he could be suspended from the party before the election for chairmanship, the youthful leader mobilised resources and all those important stakeholders to have the election held earlier than had been planned.

BMD Chairman Nehemiah Modubule last week indicated that stern action will be taken against party leaders that attended the recent ‘illegal’ BMDYL elective Congress in Ramotswa. Among the leaders were party president Ndaba Gaolathe and his deputy Wynter Mmolotsi and Segokgo was also in attendance. Speculation was rife last week that the stern action Modubule alluded to was suspension, and that Segokgo would be the first to face the music.

Anticipating that he would be suspended from the party to deny him a chance to contest the council chairmanship, Segokgo decided to move the election to this week.

In an interview with The Midweek Sun after his acceptance speech, Segokgo laughed off the suggestions that he masterminded the fast forwarding of the elections to duck the axe promised by party leadership. He said the council secretariat is the one that was handling the matter and that he had no influence in the change of dates.

He said he is innocent and it would be unlawful if any action is taken against him. He said since he is now not in the youth league he would focus most of his energy on the council. He stated beginning next week he will be working on his roadmap for the council for the remaining two and half years.
