A lament for my country
Woe is me, a caged servant of the people. Who speaks truth to authority and endures the consequential damnation! Wise sages of yonder days teach us that the voice of the people is the voice of God. Yet, these days it is the moneyed, the rich and the powerful - (oligarchy) - whose voice is divine.
Slowly and yet steadily the world powers are becoming increasingly and openly nationalistic. All of a sudden the ‘New World Order’ mantra is no longer a priority at home but an imperative for their foreign policies. At home these powers worry about immigration and national security. But for their strategic foreign interests, they sell the gullible Third World countries, who in spite of their rich human resource and mineral endowment, still depend on the ‘goodwill’ of these foreign powers to determine their agendas – that failed nonsense, multilateralism!
Discerning observers may have lately realised that Britain and America have not only expressed a practical desire to extricate themselves from supra-national bodies that not only limit national sovereignty, but have also acted on them. Brexit is a reality. The markets initially reacted violently and disdainfully to it, but as with all things, time has calmed the tumult, and the profit motif has prevailed.
In the USA signs of a nationalistic fervour, had already reared their ugly or is it beautiful head, in the twilight of President Barack Obama’s rule - with the alarming incidents of race violence directed towards the Africans that find themselves in that part of the Western Hemisphere. It has now manifested itself in a deep hatred for Muslims and so-called undocumented immigrants (esp. the Mexicans) who are blamed for all the crimes in the US today.Under these conditions, a Donald Trump victory, as indeed did the Theresa May victory in United Kingdom (UK), stunned the undiscerning. Now, The Trump is contemplating delinking from some of those multilateral economic and military entities to ‘make America great again’. And you can bet your bottom dollar, he certainly will.
Just wait until he has met the Pope, the Queen of England and of course, Madam May, then watch what transpires thereafter. The USA my dear compatriot is premised on an abiding ideology – the so-called military-industrial complex euphemistically couched in the Preamble to the Constitution as: “. . . to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.”
And for these, the people will ‘fight if necessary’ to defend their way of life and “with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honour,” as avowed in the Declaration of Independence. To what extent are we Batswana willing to defend our ‘sacred honour’? Someone recently whispered to me that the excesses of corruption and greed are firmly rooted on our dearth of moral leadership – a leadership that places a premium on legalities than morality.
