Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board Chief Executive Edson Wotho has said innovation is a critical element in agriculture if farmers need to produce high grade products that are marketable.

Briefing the media last week Wotho said farmers always complain about prices without considering the quality of their products.  “BAMB is the best payer in the world. So, it is not about BAMB prices but it’s about the efficiencies and innovation applied by the farmer,” said Wotho.

He said that BAMB buys 50 kg of maize at P120 per bag while SAFEX buys the same bag at P90. Wotho was speaking ahead of the upcoming Open Day, which will be held by parastatals under the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security next week Thursday in Serowe.

He said the ministry seeks to educate farmers about new farming technologies and improve agricultural production in the country. “We are taking agriculture to the people, we are advisors to the investors and we want to promote agriculture as a diamond that does not lose value,” said Wotho.

He added that Botswana must become a centre of excellence and look beyond its borders because of the geographical location and the expertise that she has. The event which is themed ‘Agriculture First; Be Innovative’ will enable farmers to interact and share information about the latest developments and new technologies.

General Manager of Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI) Onkabetse Matlho said for agriculture to be innovative, farmers must be educated on methods of farming. “Innovation helps the country to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on imports,” he said.
