Mascom launches modern contact centre

Mascom has launched a modern contact centre, which provides telecommunications services to local and international customers. The new company named, Direct BPO provides business process management solutions to domestic, regional and international clients across a range of sectors including telecommunications, utilities, government, finance, retail, e-commerce, travel and logistics, health care and other private sector organisation. Direct BPO offers a broad category of services, which include contact centre outsourcing, sales, and retention and back office services.

Matambo projects strong economic recovery

The country’s economy will accelerate by more than five percent this year, backed by strong recovery of the mining and non-mining sectors, Finance and Economic Development minister, Kenneth Matambo told legislators on Monday. Presenting the 2018/19 budget speech, the finance minister said the country’s growth of 5.3 percent in 2018, will be boosted by global economic recovery which always works in favour of the country’s mining sector, especially diamonds. On the surface, it will seem diamonds’ recovery is being sustained since last year as evidenced by good sales.

Govt. pumps P2bn into road infrastructure

Government is planning to invest up to P2 billion in the country’s road network in the upcoming financial year, finance minister, Kenneth Matambo has disclosed. He made the announcement when delivering the 2018/19 budget speech earlier in the week, emphasising that, road infrastructure, which is worth billions of Pula in total value is important for the country’s growth and economic diversification, hence the need for continuous upgrading and maintenance of road assets.

New Innovation Fund Committee to ‘hit ground

The implementation of the Botswana Innovation Hub (BIH) Fund is expected to breathe life into stifled startups in the innovation sector that have over the years been challenged by lack of funding. Minister for Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Dr Alfred Madigela last week urged the newly elected Botswana Innovation Fund Committee members to hit the ground running in ensuring that they commit the first grants during the current financial year. The committee that consists of members nominated from academia, business, private and public sector include; Prof David Norris of the University of Botswana, Dr Thapelo Matsheka, Dr George Matllho of the Botswana Vaccine Institute and Oteng Sebonego of NORSAD.

Budget allocation to agric falls short

A Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board (BAMB) Agronomist, Lambani Obuseng says the P1.34 billion allocated to Agriculture in the 2018/19 National Budget is not enough to support the sector. Speaking at the First National Bank (FNB) Budget Review Seminar, a day after Minister Kenneth Matambo’s Budget Speech, Obuseng said the P1.34 billion, which represents only three percent of the budget allocation is worrisome as it falls way short, if the sector is to grow to another level. In his view, Botswana has veered off the resolutions of the 2003 Maputo African Union Summit that urged African countries to commit at least 10 percent of national budget allocations to support the Agriculture sector.

She produces ginger for corporate events, weddings, parties and other social occasions. In an interview with the Business Trends, Ramomene said she started producing ginger last year when she wanted to raise money to pay for her examination fees at Botho College.

African Energy negotiating with BPC to connect to

African Energy has announced that it is currently negotiating with Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) to use the national transmission grid. The coal mining company is currently developing an integrated coal mine as well as a 450MW power plant in eastern Botswana to export power to Zambia and neighbouring countries. African Energy Managing Director, Frazer Tabeart highlighted in a statement that dialogue continued with BPC regarding connection of Sese into the local 400kV transmission grid at Phokoje substation and use of the BPC transmission grid.

Letlole La Rona buys Watershed Piazza Mall

Competition Authority has approved the acquisition of Watershed Piazza Mall in Mahalapye for P149 million by public property investment company, Letlole La Rona (LLR). Acting Chief Executive of the Competition Authority, Magdeline Gabaraane said the proposed transaction is not likely to result in the prevention or substantial lessening of competition, or endanger the continuity of the services offered in the market. “Furthermore, no public interest concerns have been identified. Pursuant to the provisions of section 60 of the Competition Act, the Authority has approved the acquisition by Letlole La Rona Limited of the Watershed Piazza Shopping Mall, together with underlying leases and the right to collect rental, from its current owner, Jus Posh Investments (Pty) Ltd,” said Gabaraane in a statement.

VCF promises to transform Botswana agribusiness

Over 200 members of the Value Chain Farming (VCF) Africa-Botswana are optimistic that if they work together they will ultimately be able to feed the nation and sell beyond borders. The farmers converged in a three-day Summer School and Conference theme, ‘Unlocking Agricultural Opportunities,’ that took place at Ave Maria Conference Centre and Botswana Univeristy of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) in Sebele, hosted in partnership with Botswana Insurance Company. Speaking at the event, Managing Director of Value Chain Farming Africa, Tshepiso Ntshobotho said the event is a bi-annual school that runs during summer and a second session in the winter session called Agribusiness Winter School and Conference.

National poverty incidence falls

Statistics Botswana Poverty Survey results have shown that national poverty incidence have decreased slightly from 19.3 percent in 2009/10 to 16.3 percent in 2015/16. The survey results show that urban villages recorded a decrease in poverty incidence between the two periods from 19.9 to 13.4 percent, while in rural areas the poverty incidence marginally decreased from 24.3 to 24.2 percent. Presenting the results last week, Deputy Statistician General, Dr Burton Mguni pointed out that urban villages recorded a decrease in poverty incidence between the two periods from 19.9 to 13.4 percent, while in rural areas the poverty incidence marginally decreased from 24.3 to 24.2 percent.

Entrepreneurs get inspiration in Denmark

Three local youth-led enterprises had an opportunity to join hundreds other international youth-led enterprises in Copenhagen, Denmark at the Creative Business Cup International Final, and are back to make an impact in Botswana. Creative Business Cup is the global initiative for entrepreneurship and innovation that supports startups, connects entrepreneurs to investors and global markets. The three are Martin De Klerk Moatshe of IFirsh, Donald Ramotshebe of Medmall Africa and Leungo Tebogo of Ba Hana Farmers Market.

People living below poverty line decreases

The number of people living below the poverty line has decreased according to the Botswana Multi-Topic Household Survey 2015/16 results released last week. The Reports states that the percentage of population living below Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) one Dollar a day ($ 1.90) has decreased from 6.4 percent in 2009/10 to 5.8 percent in 2015/16 at national level.

Africa energy plans to delist

African Energy Resources Limited has announced that it will delist on the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) next month as the administrative costs and other obligations for maintaining the BSE listing are no longer justifiable.
